Kristie is so super kind and wanted to show us one of her photos before & after and also share the steps she took in Photoshop to get to the after photo. I want all of you to FIRST NOTICE how beautiful her camera is SOOC (straight out of camera). She nailed the exposure and the focus and this is of UTMOST importance when creating beautiful photographs. Note how her edits are not fixing the photo, they are only turning it from wow to wow-er.
The Before:
- I created a duplicate layer of the image
- To increase the contrast, I set the blending mode to Soft Light at 30% opacity
- I flattened the image
- For a little more contrast, I used Curves to create a gentle “S” shape curve
- I used the Burn tool with a large brush to darken the brick (Range: Midtones and Exposure: 15%)
- I used the Dodge tool with a small brush to lighten some of the shadows on the baby’s face (Range: Shadows and Exposure: 10%)
- To increase the saturation, I went over the clothes with the Sponge Tool (Mode: Saturate and Flow: 15%)
- I used the Patch Tool to remove a bruise off of the mom’s leg
- To sharpen, I did an unsharp mask at 50% with a radius of 1 pixel and a threshold of 0
And, a few more of Kristie’s just for fun …

What do you guys think? Aren’t her images *gorgeous*? What did you all think about the before & after sharing? Is this something you’d like to see more of in the future? Was it helpful? (adding saturation with the sponge tool … something new to me!) I’d love to hear your thoughts so that I know what you’re desiring for the future. Talk to me, Lovelies! I’m listening …
Happy Friday,
jc

That was so helpful! I’ve used the sponge tool to take away a color cast from something that was white, but not for saturating something. Would love to see more!
Wow. Her work is really gorgeous! Thanks for sharing. I loved this!

Yes, yes, yes (do I sound like Meg Ryan?), this is exactly what I wanted to see! I’m so new to the post processing process and don’t recognize the techniques when I see them. This was really helpful.
I love the before and after! Thanks for that and I’d love to see more of it in the future! Love, Jess
