The relationship between mothers & daughters:

Posted in Ramblings on August 16, 2011

usMost every female knows of the incredibly unique relationship mothers and daughters have with one another. I have always known my relationship with my daughter will at several points make my heart swell and at other points make my heart ache. I will — without a doubt — be the friend that gets on her nerves more than most. I guess I just didn’t realize it would start so early.

Her hair. It’s getting so long so fast and it’s quite unpredictable. Some days there are curls and a perfect little shape, other days it is stick straight, hanging in her eyes and sticking out everywhere else. The bangs in the eyes is SO annoying to me. I mean seriously, do you think as women we are just born hating hair hanging in kids’ eyes?!

Many times a day I do a quick “drive-by” and sweep her bangs out of her eyes and, if given the chance, tuck her hair behind her ears. Just within the past week though she has decided that if that’s how momma likes it that is not how she wants it. She will literally pull her hair out from behind her ears and all but smack her head to get her hair back into her eyes.

Corey didn’t believe me until he saw it with his own eyes and this morning I was able to document the beginnings of our “mooooom, leave me alooooone!” relationship.

(or link to it here.)

What do you all think she’s saying to me in that last little babble? Lucky for her she still has her own language. ; )

Do you all have things you did in-spite of what your mom wanted? What about those of you with daughters … are there things they insist on doing simply because you want it otherwise? This whole relational dynamic is so fascinating to me.

xo,

p.s. For whatever reason my Southern accent comes out in full-force when I’m talking to Charley.

p.p.s. One of my favorite Youtube videos ever of a little girl explaining to her mom what she plans on doing if the monster in the movie comes to her house. : )

Pretty sure Charley is saying ‘no, like this!’ ;)   And that little girl and the monster?  So awesome.  The best part is that she looks totally confused as to why her mama is laughing.

Totally! I can already see it: I’m going to be buying her clothes and then she’ll probably wear them backward or upside down or something and be like, “Mom, this is how the cool kids are doing it nowadays.” ; )

Oh my goodness, this is so Ella. It’s a joke with all my friends on “what is Ella going to wear today”. When she was 2, we fought about what she would wear. Finally, I decided I wouldn’t major on the minors and I would let her decide. It was causing too much stress every morning. We tried the picking out the clothes the night before, but that didn’t work. So it’s gotten better, b/c I try to explain what goes with what and all that jazz. But now it’s the hair. She wants it a certain way everyday. Today she wanted it in a side ponytail right next to her face, think 80′s. I finally was like “no, that will look really bad” and put it in a side ponytail that wasn’t too 80′s…but still enough on the side to satisfy her. Oh, girl, the battles:)

You are going to treasure this, especially later! So adorable!
That link…omGOSH!! I laughed so hard I had tears, I made my husband come watch and he cracked up to. Totally made my day! Thank you :D

So funny and cute!  I love the first picture of you two.  Maren recently quit giving those open mouth kisses and I miss them :)

I don’t think there is really a lot of doubt about what we all think Charley is saying to you there at the end.     blahblahnoocdblahblahblah  but we like that about you ;-) …

LOVE IT! Caroline woke up this morning with her hair sticking out (which we call “chickens”) on either side of her head…as in completely horizontal to the ground! And her hair also falls straight into her eyes so I spend lots of time redoing the hair bow. She has already started yanking it out and she’s only 9 months old! I can’t believe they start so early!

This scenario is hilarious, simply because London has such a personality of his own and at times can be soooo independent and other times be such a mama’s boy – the contradiction cracks me up!  However, having said that, when someone gives him an unwelcomed kiss on the cheek – usually Anthony, he will smack it off his face – literally.  Little Charley’s hand action there trying to get the hair back in her eyes, reminds me exactly of the motion L makes when he’s ‘removing a kiss.’

One other funny story and then I’ll shut up…the other day we were in a hurry trying to get all four of us out the door for something very important i’m sure, and London had “parked” his Sherrif Woody car behind the door leading to our garage.  Without realizing this very purposeful action of his, (and trying to be a good mom expecting that he would later pitch a fit bc we didn’t bring said action figure with us) I picked it up and started out the door to the car.  As soon as I hit the doorway where L could see me, his sweet adorable face you see so often in my pictures turned down, his brows furrowed, he put his finger in the air at me, and began SCREAMING something at me like some old angry shrew – waving the finger the entire time!  I literally had to turn my head back inside the door frame to keep him from seeing me laugh.  I’m sure what he was saying was something along the lines of, ‘i put that there for a reason, you big dummy, now put it back!’  Once i composed myself, i turned back to him and, of course, like any good mama would do, told him that was not how he talks to his mom, blah, blah, blah and tried to make a lesson out of it.  needless to say, the action figure was re-parked behind the door and my sweet little boy provided me with the necessary forced apology.

Oh this just cracks me up!!  Thanks for sharing!! :)

  • Karyn

I actually changed the spelling of the name my mother gave me. I was sixteen. There were three of us called Karen in my class, so I became Karyn. It took her about five years to climb onto that one, but she has come around. Now I have a daughter who picked out her first pair of glasses this week. She chose the neon pink and orange plastic frames. They’re not the ones I would have picked for her, but she’s the one wearing them, so I let her choose. I do pick my battles, as I’ve heard that I should. Picking out frames for glasses and clothes, that’s the small stuff. I let it go.

    This is awesome!

We have a mirror in front of Charley’s car seat in the car and as soon as I put her in it she’ll see her little clip, pull it out and either throw it or stick it in her mouth. Sigh … ; )

Hahahahhahaha! Gotta love a kid with a passionate plan. ; )

I am so relishing in the fact that I still get to pick out what she wears. I can already tell with her personality that she will be very adamant about what *she* wants to wear in no time at all. I’m thinking I have a year or less. (p.s. love that line – “not majoring in the minors.” it’s a great thing to keep in mind always.)
