what to read?

Hi Lovelies,

Charley thoroughly enjoys reading the Baby Einstein book Mirror Me. I love it too because I can see her face and expressions in the mirrors. She doesn’t react to her reflection in the mirror yet, but every time we read the ‘Say, “Cheese!”‘ page she smiles. It’s adorable.

This week I’ve been reading a fantastic book my mom gave me this past weekend: How to Have Your Second Child First. It’s basically about how overly serious, stressed and analytical we can be with our first, but with our second child we are much more laid back simply because we’ve been there before and know all works out in the end. And, honestly …  parents really don’t have another option when there’s more than one human being 100% dependent on you. I’m going to start giving it as a gift at all future baby showers I attend. It is a must-read for first-time parents! Very fun and funny and with each page it makes me feel just a tad more normal. ; )

Apart from this book I’m looking for a good book to read when I crawl into bed at night. Something I can escape to like a Twilight … or Honeymoon with My Brother … or Marley and Me or Redeeming Love. Something really good and easy to get lost in. Something that will help me unwind from my baby-crazed days. Any ideas? I can’t seem to find anything that looks appealing.

xo!

p.s. I leave for Jesh de Rox’s workshop in Austin on Monday. (Leaving sweet girl for the first time …. {sigh}) I plan to write Part 2 on the flight down. : )

I just finished reading “The Secret Life of CeeCee Wilkes” by Diane Chamerlain. I read it with my online bookclub “Book Beginnings and Bookends. ” I could not put the book down. Fantastic book.

Also our book club is starting a new book in 2 weeks if you would like to join us.

I just finished The Hunger Games trilogy…which is very good, but pretty intense. I highly recommend it, but only if you want to stay up late reading, which isn’t really conducive to a newborn-household. :)

Glad to hear y’all are doing well. I think of you all often!!

I highly recommend Heart of the Matter by Emily Giffin. It’s making the rounds of my mommy-friends right now and everyone has loved it. Actually anything by Emily Giffin is awesome. Her book before this one was Love the One You’re With and the main character is a photographer. She is superb at developing characters you feel like you know and are invested in. I couldn’t wait to pick it back up everytime I laid the book down. Let us know what you choose! I’m always on the look-out for something new to read.

I love your work, it’s under my favorites so I check back often.
I love to read, a few of my favorites are hunger games trilogy, memoirs of a geisha, and Nicholas Sparks The Notebook!

I’m so happy for you. Those expressions are priceless!
Have you read Same Kind of Different as Me? Loved that book. Also just read the Castaways. That was good too. How awesome that you be in Austin! Explore if you can! You’ll love it. Of course I’m sure the workshop will be AMAZING!! Have a great time!

I agree with Kelly, anything Emily Griffin. Can’t wait to read part two!!!

Karen Kingsbury has a series of series. The first part series I think is Redemption. They are super easy to read and have a great story. Can be a bit of a tear jerker though. After I finished all of them, they were like a part of my family!:) The characters are The Baxter Family.

I just love your blog!!! I can tell you are so in love with your precious little babe! I would have loved that book you are reading! Sounds like a great read!
I just got done reading a book by Kelly Corrigan called “The Middle Place”. It was fantastic! It’s a short read but full of inspiration, funny storires and a mama’s love. Her second book “Lift” is also very good. I got both at my library. LOVED THEM! Short and sweet books for a new mommy!

Hey Jessica, first of all, I am super jealous that you get to go to Jesh’s workshop in Austin. It may be a bit premature for me to attend at this point in my photography journey, so I did not sign up, but I know its an opportunity of a lifetime. I am kicking myself in the butt now, especially the more I think/dream about going pro some day.

Annnnyway, I highly recommend “Beach Music” by Pat Conroy. It’s my favorite. It’s a bit long and intense, but it will sweep you away and you will escape in it. It’s set in Italy mostly and some in the U.S. Excellent book.

I will check out the book you mentioned, even though we are 15 months into parenthood, I still suffer from “first time mom syndrome”. I can already see where I will be more laid back with a second one (if we shall be so blessed), but only in the areas we’ve already experienced.

I hope Charley and you and your husband are adjusting well. It will just get more and more fun and rewarding and amazing as time goes on. I continue to think and say that “this is the best / my favorite stage so far!” with every passing month.

    xoxo,
    Lauren

P.S. I’d love to hear a full report on the workshop and whether or not you think wannabe’s would benefit. DUH. It’s Jesh. You know what I mean though?

I agree that the Hunger Games is a good series (kinda like Twilight in that they kept me awake). I also recently read “The Help” (Kathryn Stokett) because it came recommended to me by a few people. It’s a really good one.

Some of my most recent reads…. The Lottery, Little Bee, CeeCee Wilkes, This is Where I Leave You, True Colors, Mennonite in a Little Black Dress, Somewhere Inside… happy reading!

Okay so i was late to this post, but wanted to second the emily griffin recommendation. Except the two books that were mentioned were definietly not my favorite of hers. Start from the beginning with Something Borrowed.. one of my all time favorite books. Then go with Something Blue. Both excellent books.

I recently read the first book in the Sookie Stackhouse series “Dead untill Dark” by Charline Harris because I couldn’t get off the vampire kick after finishing the Twilight Saga! Nowhere NEAR the amazingness that is the Twilgiht series, but seriously what can live up to THAT?! It’s a fun read though.

I agree with the “same kind of different as me” recommendation as well… great book. Then the sequel to that is great as well. Very inspiring and “get up off you butt” kind of book.

Elegance by Kathleen Tessaro is a great read as well.

I’m glad you did this, I’ve been wanting to start a new good book that would consume me the way Twilight and Redeeming Love did!! Can’t wait to get started!

Thank you so much for the lovely shout-out to my book, How to Have Your Second Child First. It pleases me to no end that it helps you feel “a tad more normal”…that was our goal! I’m so happy you’ll be giving it at showers; I hope it helps your friends and blog readers, too. Really enjoyed visiting your site; come see me sometime at http://www.secondchildfirst.wordpress.com
PS: “That’s my daughter in the water” makes me cry every time, too–and my daughters are 5 and 2 so I can’t blame it on hormones anymore!
